Celebrating 20 Years!
CANTON OH-(March 28th, 2023)- Muggswigz Coffee and Tea Company celebrates their 20th year in business this April, 2023. Opening the shop in 2003, Founder and President, Alex Haas, sought to make Downtown Canton a ‘Destination Spot’ and revitalize the area with a shop serving specialty coffee, tea, baked goods, and supporting local artists. The company has come a long way since then, going from not having an ice maker and roasting coffee with a popcorn maker, to award winning roasted coffees, barista teams, and yes, a commercial ice machine. To celebrate, Muggswigz has a special line up of ways to celebrate, and want the community who supported them and kept them around to join in.
For the month of April, every Wednesday, all drinks will be 39% off, the percentage representing the cumulative rate of inflation since 2003. Muggswigz is bringing back drink specials from the early days, including the ‘Rocky Orange’, ‘Cafe Con Leche’, and Turkish Coffee. On Tuesday evenings, there will be special Open Mic Night Performers (see the Facebook group for more details) and songs dating to or before 2003 are encouraged. On April 3rd, Muggswigz will host a Poetry Open Mike Night. A community art project will be available to be on display and open for all guests, as well as previous years’ community art projects on display.
Muggswigz has been Canton’s local coffee roaster and tea merchant since 2003. There are four locations located in Downtown Canton, Jackson Township, Portage Lakes, and Downtown Akron. It is locally owned and operated and roasts coffee for its retail and wholesale customers at its Canton location. To learn more about Muggswigz, visit www.muggswigz.com. Clear Skies Coffee Blend
One of our most recent coffee blends to hit our retail shelves is the 'Clear Skies Blend.' This coffee is medium roasted with rich notes of molasses and tobacco; boasting a low caffeine content. The delicious tasting notes are not the most unique aspect of this blend however. 10% of sales are being donated by Muggswigz to the Summit County Astronomy Club, located in Fairlawn, Oh. The Observatory, a 501(c)3, announces when it is operating and is free and open to the public. With almost 1,600 members, this nonprofit seeks to encourage curiosity about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math through exploration of the Universe. They provide both Star Gazing at their Bath Nature Preserve location as well as Solar observing at various locations. Available times to 'explore the Universe' at the Observatory are posted on their Facebook.
Wine Infused Coffee
Muggswigz is no stranger to experiments, and their recent coffee blend is a testament to that. Having recently roasted a Pyrite Blend, possibly the most light roasted coffee a shop can roast and has notes more akin to a coffee tea with pumpkin. Their newest coffee blend is the 'Wine Infused Coffee' and was introduced to their shop's retail shelves within the last month. There is no alcohol in the coffee blend itself, although the aroma, the taste and smell together, are full of a dark Merlot. The green beans are infused with wine soaking in all of the flavor notes, infusing them with a full bodied flavor and scent of grape, raspberry, and cherry. Match that with the coffee after being roasted and you've got a unique coffee and a special gift idea for that someone who enjoys both coffee and wine. It tastes like coffee and wine in one beverage, it is as simple as that. The coffee comes in whole bean, 1lb and 1/2 lb, resealable bags. Supply is limited.
Tanzania Peaberry New Coffee Arrival
This Tanzania Peaberry Coffee has flavor notes of rhubarb, toffee, and orange and was grown at an altitude of 1219 masl. It is a washed processed coffee from the Kent and Bourbon varieties and is grown near the Kilimanjaro region. Producer use a small hand pulper during harvest and processing. Ripe cherries are depulped quickly and soaked for about 72 hours before being washed and fully dried on elevated beds for anywhere between 9 and 12 days. Peaberry is a very unique coffee as it forms a single, flat bean inside each cherry instead of the typical 2 beans per cherry.
Historically, the Haya people of Tanzania consumed coffee by chewing the fruit more than drinking it as a beverage. Mount Kilimanjaro has Arabica coffee growing around it as a cash crop that German colonists had mandated. The British took over from the Germans after the first World War and sought to make coffee a more profitable industry. In 1964, Tanzania became independent from colonial rule. In the 1990's, were able to privatize coffee exports and sell coffee more directly.
